POETRY magazine welcomes unsolicited poetry book reviews and essays pertaining to poets and poetry. We strongly prefer pieces that are not single-book reviews, but rather review essays that discuss two or three books in light of larger matters; suggested word-length is about 1, - 1, words. The book collects a popular form of African-American literature and folk poetry known as "toasts." For 30 years, it carried the reputation of a "stone cold classic," mightily praised by critics, cultural historians, musicians, poets and general-interest readers alike.
