- In tragic poetry Asinius Pollio gained distinction. Pollio was also a soldier, historian, orator, and statesman. He established the first public library at Rome, and introduced the practice whereby authors before publishing their works read them to a select circle of friends in order to profit by their criticisms. The Second book contains two long epistles: The first to Augustus criticizing admiration for the archaic poets and examines the development of Roman literature. The second, to Julius Florus, is a sort of retirement from poetry and describes the Roman writer’s daily life .

The first book, and some portions of the second Punic war, are, in Niebuhr's judgment, the most beautiful portions of the whole work.
